Ignatius Xavier Ryan, SJ, is dying from cancer when he disappears in rural Pennsylvania. He awakes from cryosleep seventy-five years later, his cancer cured, but his resurrection by science, not faith, creates a controversy for a newly conservative Church. Banished to the future to quell the controversy, he awakes a millennium later to a world with a pristine environment and virtually no trace of civilization.
